There is an orchid that represents one of the largest geneses in the orchid family. They are called Dendrobium orchids and they can great vary in size, shape, and color. You can find most of these orchids in tropical weather or places like Asia and New Guinea. However these types of orchids have so much diversity that you can possible find these types of orchids in almost any environment.

Dendrobium orchids are perfect place for a beginner to start their orchid garden. These types of orchids are known for their resiliency and there ease of care. Now you still need to know the basic care for whatever particular dendrobium that you choose but once they start growing they will almost grow on their own.

Dendrobiums tend to grow during the spring and summer. These orchids can grow very tall and need to be re-potted every few seasons. This task can be a little tricky so it’s best to this during the plants resting period or in the fall or winter months.

There are a few similarities that exist between dendrobiums and that is that they love sunlight and they also like small pots where there roots are confined. Keep in mind that when you expose orchids to sunlight that you pay attention to not allow them to be in direct sunlight in the hottest part of the day. Direct sunlight for too long can burn there fragile leaves and take away from their natural beauty. So one suggestion would be to put these orchids in a place where the orchids can get early morning sun but they are shaded away from the midday sun.

Even though these orchids love being watered it’s vital to know that watering these flowers every day is not advised. Try giving your orchids ample water every other day. Also the humidity level should be taken into consideration. There are humidity trays that you can use to have more control over the humidity. Ask whoever you are buying your seeds or plant from about any special humidity considerations.

As far as temperature this also depends on the type of dendrobium orchid that you have chosen. Some varieties like temperatures ranging from 50 – 75 degrees Fahrenheit while others like temperatures between 60 – 86 degrees. Once again make sure that you ask about any special needs that your orchid’s type may have.

I know it may seem like these types of orchids are difficult to take care of but they are actually quite easy once you get them started. Every gardener is different so the level of care you give your orchids will vary with the type of garden you want and the various level of skill you have as a gardener. But these flowers are very beautiful and popular because of their ability to grow without having perfect conditions and an ideal environment.

The orchid family, with strong orchids stem, is one of the most famous and beautiful families of flowering plants. It is officially known as Orchidaceae, which is a variation of large monocots family. The species of orchids is twice bigger than the bird species in terms of quantity; compared to the mammal species, on the other hand, the orchid species is four times bigger.

The life of an orchid stretches up to two years or more. Unlike other flowering plants, they do not have a woody body or structure. This characteristic sets them apart from others. Orchids grow in two ways: monopodially and sympodially.

In monopodial, orchids stem grows and develops from a bud. Each year, leaves grow from the apex and the stem becomes longer. In this method of growing, orchid stems can reach a length of up to few meters. In sympodial, the orchid produces several adjoining shoots. These shoots grow in different sizes; they bloom and then eventually stop growing. That is the time they will be replaced. They grow horizontally, not vertically, and usually follow the line of support. Their growth phase continues with the production of new shoots or leads.

Orchids stem can be propagated as a way of multiplying supplies. With successful propagation, the propagated plant can bloom in just a year’s time. With proper materials and tools, you can do propagation at home. Propagation of the orchid stem involves the mixing and cooking of certain substances. It is very important to have an instructional manual so you can follow the steps correctly. You must cut the right portion, and that plant must already have flowers that are half-opened. Every step needs to be accomplished carefully. Make sure all tools are sterilized. Using the correct room temperature is also important for this can affect the development of your propagated stem.

Some orchids are raised in the garden and some in the greenhouse. Orchids raised in greenhouses are said to be epiphytes. This is because they come from places with tropical climate. Tropical climate is favorable in growing plants; thus, competition in these places is very strong. Researchers say that orchids probably once grew from the ground. But because of the strong competition for sunlight and nutrients in tropical places, orchids evolved and sought better and new places where they can grow freely with more sunlight and nutrients. And so orchids climbed to higher places like trees and shrubs. Because of this, orchids roots have changed to support the plants’ climbing needs.

Orchids roots have a core inside called cortex. The cortex is a very tough part of the plant and responsible for carrying nourishment. The roots also have outside covering or what we call the velamen. Velamen is responsible for absorbing water, oxygen, fertilizer and for clinging strongly to any contact because of this, they are not only able to attach themselves well, but they are also able to maximize any food and moisture they can get from any contact. In the wild, these roots can grow up to several meters in length.

One of the most important functions of orchids roots is the exchange of gases in order to have oxygen. These roots open to any moving air. It can be wind, fresh air or air from blowing fan as long as it moves. Another function is to photosynthesize. Some species of orchids live in places with climates that change dramatically. They can go dormant or deciduous in dry climate; some will stay without any leaves. In this case, roots become responsible for the production of enough moisture to help the entire plant stay alive. Indeed, the roots of the orchid are essential to its very existence.

Orchids are known for the variations in their flowers in terms of quantity and structure. Some orchid plants have only one flower, but most have flowers in cluster forms. The orchids flowering stem can grow from the bottom of tuber. It can also grow from the major stem and also from the axis of a leaf.

There are many theories on inducing orchids flowering. These hypothesize on manipulating nutrients, water, light, temperature and humidity. Many are asking which of these are true and not. Information that lacks science-based proof limits hobbyists and greenhouse growers. Experts advise orchid enthusiasts to read scientific journals as well as to create flowering methods of their own through the process of trial and error.

Orchids always respond or adapt to changes in temperature or season. Because of this, they can bloom naturally when conditions in the environment becomes favorable for reproduction. Plants that bloom only in reaction to photo period are frequently categorized by the plants’ response to the length of night and length of day.

Aside from the photoperiod, manipulating temperature also has an effect on inducing orchids flowering. Growers can expose plants to cool temperature for a period of time. After this, plants can then be exposed to warmer temperature. This method varies for every species of plants.

Having a controlled environment like what a greenhouse offers is also one important factor in inducing flowering. In a controlled environment, growers can manipulate light and temperature. Air can also be controlled and measured inside a greenhouse. And of course, growers can prevent pests and other problems from existing.

There are no scientific evidences that show chemicals, nutrients, and even water can induce orchids flowering. Applying such methods only brings stress to the plants, and when they are stressed, orchids tend to flower just before dying. This is definitely not what true hobbyists and growers want for their precious orchids.

The orchid is a very beautiful yet sensitive flowering plant. Having one in your garden brings beauty and joy to everyone who sees it. Taking care of orchids is not an easy task; also, propagating orchids is a very difficult process. In order to prolong the life of your orchid plants and to increase their number, you must be knowledgeable in the necessary steps. Or you must have guide such as orchids books where you can get tips and information about the plant.

There are many available ways with which you can acquire information about orchids. You can access and browse the internet. You will be surprised to find numerous sites about orchids. You can buy DVDs or CDs and watch instructional videos to get the things you want to know about this flowering plant. But nothing compares to going hands-on, especially if you wish to grow orchids outdoors. Not all orchids can be placed on pots; you can attach some of them on trees. It is very inconvenient to bring your computer or television outside just to watch and make sure you do the steps correctly. For this reason, it is better to invest in orchids books.

You can just bring these books outside and place them on a table beside for easy reference. You can read instructions and follow them step by step. Because books are very portable, you can take them anywhere with you and study orchids anytime you want. You can visit a fellow orchid enthusiast and have a planting or propagation activity together.

There are different orchids books. There are books that will tell you how to cultivate and take care of orchids. There are books that talk about the basics of orchid-growing such; these will show the different parts of the plant, etc. Of course, most if not all of these books have several galleries of pictures inside for easier understanding.

The orchid is a very sensitive flowering plant and requires extra care compared to other plants. Orchids do not usually suffer from common ailments due to several reasons. That is why diseases and pests are alien to many orchid species, particularly those that are grown inside the house. Since we let them grow indoors, these orchids are not exposed to the problems commonly faced by other plants. But orchid problems do exist.

Some of the most common problems for orchid plants are slugs, weevils, common scale, boisduval scale and other insects like mealybug, blackfly, thrips, spider mite and greenfly. Conditions caused by slugs or snails can easily be distinguished by their silvery trails or even holes on leaves, flowers or flower stems. These can be easily eliminated by sprinkling slug liquid from a distance on a regular basis. Attacks of weevils can be seen when there are uneven pieces or missing chunks from a border of a leaf. You need to spray consistently every five days for three weeks in order for these to be completely eradicated.

Common scale and boisduval scale can be found once you check the underside of the leaves. Common scale is like a limpet creature and generally has a hard body that causes the leaves to have a dark mildew on it. However, boisduval scales are tiny and fluffy masses and are generally white. Because of this, they are sometimes mistakenly for white fungus and sometimes even for mealybugs. These particular orchid problems must be solved right away, for they destroy the whole plant or even your entire collection.

The presence of mealybugs can be identified once you notice the existence of a cotton wool on the leaf’s axils which contain a brownish creature. You can apply a fungicide, pesticide or just a cotton bud with methylated spirits. Doing this can eradicate mealybugs. To avoid such occurrences of orchid problems, you must know how to spot them in order to perform the appropriate treatment.

Orchid is one of the oldest among flowers that are living until now. Orchids have been around for approximately eighty million years and multiplied their varieties of up to thousands.

The stems of the orchids were then eaten by Greek women to increase their fertility. Charles Darwin, the most famous among botanists actually grew different varieties of orchids which had helped him confirm and discover theories of evolution. He found out that orchids can be cross pollinated and they can self-pollinate in cold and harsh climate. Through his findings, the next generations of botanists were able to formulate orchid growing tips.

Orchids are considered gems because of their beautiful flowering stems and leaves. Not only they are colorful and elegant, but also they give off a fragrant smell. Since orchids are considered as sensitive flowering plants because of the extra care they need in order for them to bloom and thrive, it is very important that you learn orchid tips to avoid problems in the future.

Orchid growing tips can give you numerous ideas on proper care for them. The first thing you need to know about orchids is their varieties or species. Identifying them correctly will help you know key points like their structure, environment adaptation, temperature, air movement and nutrients needed to grow and bloom. Different species have different needs. It is also important to know the advance methods now being applied in growing orchids.

Orchids which are easy and moderate to manage are readily available in different nurseries. They include common and general varieties of orchids such as Cymbidiums, Cattleya, Phalaenopsis and Vanda.

Orchid growing tips are available in books, the internet and even on television shows showcasing orchids care. It is highly recommended to read books or research over the internet for complete details about orchids and caring for them. Know about the exact air movement, air temperature and humidity for each species so you can give your plants the best care possible.

Aside from growing orchids outdoors, a lot of people prefer growing their orchids inside their houses. In order for these orchids to grow naturally, orchid enthusiasts are required to perform additional tasks, including providing a designated space for them to live in, even if it is just a small or somewhat limited area. A window facing either west or east is ideal as long as the sunlight coming in through the window will not directly hit orchids. However, in case this is not attainable, then a fluorescent lamp can be used as a substitute. The recommended lighting is the use of two lamps with a 20-watt rating with reflectors for every 1 foot by 2 feet area. Growing orchids indoors really requires a lot. If this particular task is giving you a hard time, the good news is that there are nurseries or other garden stores wherein lights are already set-up specifically for indoors.

Temperature also plays a big role in growing orchids indoors. It should be more than 60 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. There are instances when the temperature reaches higher that that which is recommended, and these often occur at daytime. In scenarios when orchids are placed on a window sill, do not forget to reposition them once the temperature drops, which often happens at nighttime.

Aside from temperature and lighting, moist air also plays a vital part in growing orchid plants indoors. One of the best ideas is to place the pots in tray and put wet gravel with a half inch of water in it. This will add humidity since the water will be prompted to evaporate immediately. Another option is to apply a mister occasionally directly to the orchids so that they can have the necessary moisture.

Air circulation is needed for growing orchids indoors. You just need to put a small fan or open the window when the temperature feels a little warmer required.

Orchids make good decorations at home because of the nice colors their flowers have. For novice plant growers, it is important to note that buying orchids does not refer to simply rushing to a garden shop and buy a flowering plant that looks nice. To order orchids, there are necessary guidelines and factors one must consider before the actual purchase.

Before you actually order orchids, you must first check the background of the shop you are planning to buy your ideal plant from. Select a shop that is trustworthy, and is well established. The proof of their fame would mean that they are famous for having top class variants of orchids, and that they are properly cared for until the time they are reproduced.

Order orchids that are mature and blooming, especially if you are a novice. Novice plant growers are susceptible to mistakes as it is their first time, and mature plants, as compared to their seedlings, are more immune to mistakes. They do not easily change mechanism upon small glimpse of mistakes unlike a young seedling that is very sensitive whose growth might be affected if you handle it the wrong way.

Finally, consider the location on where you’re planning to place the orchid plant you are purchasing as you select the perfect orchid variant. Most orchids are sensitive to its environment, and if you put them in the wrong place, they might end up withering and dying. Make sure that you place them in a location where ventilation is possible and sunlight is readily accessible and that there is enough space for your plant to grow as high and wide as it can. Therefore, you should first think about where you are planning to place it, before proceeding to inspect the rest of the plant, including its turgidity and flexibility, in order to elongate the life of your dearly beloved plant.

Every season, orchid plant owners must do orchids pruning to make sure that their plants will grow healthier. But some people, especially novice orchid growers, are way too nervous about orchids pruning – they find it a difficult, intimidating task. You don’t really have to worry about it. This article will tell you how you can prune orchids the right way.

The first thing you should consider in orchids pruning is the season and time. Pruning your orchids is best done during that period when your orchids do not have any more blooms.

Make sure you know what your orchid is. Pruning differs for every variety of orchids, therefore it is important that you know what type your orchid is to know how you are going to cut it. There are orchids that need to be pruned immediately as the flower begins to wilt, while other orchids have to be pruned when the stems turn brown. You do not want to prune them unnecessarily, or they might end up dying.

Always make certain that you are using the correct tools as you do the pruning task. Among all the tools you will need, a clean pair of scissors is the most important. Disinfect it with a dilute bleach solution and wear gloves to protect your hands from both solution and dirt. Always make sure that you do your job in a clean manner, to avoid infections and viral diseases which your plants may get if they are not cared for properly.

Know where you are going to cut your orchid plants. You should cut the actual branch on the node where they originated from. Always leave a quarter of an inch from the node you are cutting, and trim them accordingly.

Finally, always check the orchid roots. Some plants also require trimming in the roots, and that you must do to make sure that plant gets proper nutrition. Good luck on your orchids pruning!

Orchids are convenient plants to care for. They may grown as indoor or outdoor plants, depending on their variety. Growing orchids indoors can not only bring color to your home, but it can also provide you with a cool and clean atmosphere. Here are some tips you may want to consider in caring for your orchids around the house:

Select the brightest windows that will accommodate your orchids. A few obstructions against the light are fine, as long as most of the plant receives enough sunlight despite it being inside the house.

Keep your plants as close to the glass as possible, especially if they are located in the northern or eastern parts of your house. This way, sunlight will still be able to touch your plants. Growing orchids indoors must also be strict in handling exposure to the sun, as too much exposure can cause malnourishment and early death. To avoid these unfortunate circumstances, provide a sheer curtain or window blinds to protect the plants from the harmful rays of the sun especially during the afternoons. When the leaves turn yellow, keep your plants away from sunlight for a while until the leaves revert back to their healthy green color.

Provide enough ventilation for your plants to allow fresh air to breeze through. Not enough ventilation may only produce toxins that are harmful to the plants and may even be a cause for the existence of fungi and the accumulation of bacteria. Give enough water and fertilizer to your plants. Remember, though, that too much water can drown them, or prompt their roots to rot and die. Read orchid books to get an idea of how much water you should use.

Lastly, always maintain a clean environment for your orchids. Remove weeds, apply insecticides when necessary, and make sure that you use proper tools in maintaining your plants. Good luck on growing orchids indoors!

Orchids are always attractive, and most home-based women (and men) love taking care of them. For a starter who is planning to take care of orchids at home, you may want to consider this article before you select which orchids to buy for you to take care of.

Different varieties of orchid grow in different conditions. In selecting the perfect orchids to buy, therefore, it is important that you select one that perfectly suits the environment of the place where you will be keeping them. Do not buy an orchid that could not stand cold temperatures or those which will not live under warm ones. Some orchids prefer living in terrestrial places and some in water, while most of them prefer living in an air-based setting. Keep all these in mind so you’ll be able to make the right choice.

Mature blooming-size plants are viable choice for a starter. They are stronger than younger seedlings, and can tolerate growing mistakes. For a beginner, mature plants are ideal. Younger seedlings are sensitive and will cease to grow if not cared for properly.

Make sure you purchase orchids from reputable growers. This way, you can be certain that the orchids have been properly cared for at the time of budding and that they are in the top condition. This way, you can be sure you will not experience any inconvenience as you start growing them yourself.

Finally, in selecting orchids to buy, you should carefully inspect the plants you wish to purchase. It is not enough that they look nice. Make sure that the leaves and bulbs are turgid and firm, with the leaves uniformly green in color. The roots, if you could inspect them, must be firm and white with green tips. Finally, the potting mix in which they are planted should be moist and made of healthy soil.

One of the greatest disasters an orchid plant grower can encounter is the sudden existence of orchid yellow leaves. Obviously, this is a warning sign that the orchid plants emit, .Before you fall into despair asking where you went wrong, it is best to calm down so you can deal with the situation properly. When orchid yellow leaves show up, something not right happened, and because of this, you must immediately do something to prevent things from getting worse.

What brought about the existence of yellow leaves on your beloved orchid plants? There are a lot of factors to think of, and some of them include bacterial and fungal diseases, too much light or water, and many others.

When the orchid yellow leaves look like irregular yellow spots, then no doubt they were caused by bacterial or fungal disease. In this case, entire leaves will no turn yellow but only the infected spots. There are treatments available for this, such as fungicides.

The yellow leaves might have also been caused by too much light, causing the leaves to get burned and turn yellow. If this is the case or if this is what happened to your plants, the best thing to do would be to remove them from direct light and allow them to recover their lost chlorophyll. Eventually, they will turn back to green.

Just like over lighting, too much water can also make plant leaves turn yellow. This is an evidence of rotting, as the roots got drowned from too much water. In this case, you should halt from watering them for about a week while treating them appropriately to restore them to their normal health.

Toxins and constantly changing weather are also factors to be considered when orchid leaves turn yellow. The change of color is an effect of the damage the plants suffered. Not only orchid yellow leaves are affected but the entire plant. You should always make sure to let them give them proper air circulation to avoid exposure to toxins, and make sure that you grow your orchids in the right temperature.

Orchid pruning is important in maintaining the proper care for orchids. This is an important step in plant maintenance. You must make sure that plants do not dry up and die. The turning of your orchids’ stalks yellow is inevitable. Pruning is a step you can take in order to prevent the death from spreading throughout your garden.

When the stalks turn yellow, you may cut your orchids until about an inch from where its blossom stalk sprouted from. You may also opt to remove the stalk of the blossom for the purpose of shortening it, but keep in mind that you should retain at least enough for the entire stalk to be able to bloom once more.

Apart from being an important maintenance step for the prevention of death in all your plants, orchid pruning may also be a method of reproducing your orchids. If cut the right way and properly cared for, the stems you cut off are sure to bloom again.

It is advisable to prune your orchids when they are dormant and have no more flower blooms. Make sure also to keep your utensils clean to ensure the plants’ safe re-blooming as soon as you transfer it to a new pot.

In pruning, always remember to not harm the node as you cut it off, for this is where new sprouts will arise. Also, do not remove a dead part from your plant. If you do, there may be a bigger chance for the infection to spread all throughout. Just remember these bits of advice and you can expect re-growth from the nodes in no time.

Plants do not only exist for aesthetic purposes alone. They are also a part of the circle of life. Make sure you give your orchids the proper care. With orchid pruning, you can give your orchids another chance to live.

Orchids pots are very important in taking care of orchid plants. Because these plants need re-potting at least every two years, the quality of the pots where they’re going to be transferred must be thoroughly put into consideration. You have to think about your plants’ needs. There are many orchid pots, and they come in different types and sizes, but which one is ideal for your own plant?

There are three basic types of orchids pots; the plastic pot, the terracotta pot, and the basket pot.

To begin with, a plastic pot for orchids is a lightweight pot, designed with many drainage holes due to compensate its poor drying capability. This type of pot is suitable and well advised for indoor planting, as there are lower chances of it being blown away when it is just inside the house. Compared to conventional clay pots, plastic pots dry slower and have thick walls that do not easily break. They do not absorb too much heat under a strong sunlight, and they may be purchased either in light colors or in transparent ones, allowing sunlight to filter through.

A terracotta pot, on the other hand, is more stable due to its heavy-duty characteristics, making it an advisable pot to use for outdoor orchids. It is usually designed with a drainage hole located at the bottom part of the pot itself. A terracotta pot is ideal for terrestrial and spreading orchids.

Last is the basket pot, which is very suitable for orchids that have pendant flowers and heavy-rooted ones. Usually made out of wire, mesh, plastic, or pottery, or wood, a basket orchid pot permits the air to easily circulate within the roots. It is ideal for blooming flowers because it allows the orchids to easily grow. However, you should always make sure to keep the plants damp and not let them dry in their basket pots. Good luck in choosing the best orchids pots!

Orchids are flower plants that are always admired because of their aesthetic perfection. Taking care of such plants may be a little different because of their air habitat, but if you take care of them properly, you will be able to see them bloom with grace under the bright sun. Orchids may be indoor or outdoor plants, depending on their families and how you actually manage them. An important step in taking care of this plant is re-potting orchids.

Re-potting orchid plants is essential, as they will constantly need a space where they can grow freely. Letting them stay in the same pot for too long will only kill them due to poor nutrition and suffocation.

In re-potting orchids, the first thing you should do is to make sure that the roots are free from the old soil. Take good care of the said roots, and trim them with heavy scissors or shears. Make sure that your cutting materials are clearly sterilized to prevent having your orchids acquire any unwanted diseases that may cause death to your precious flowering plants.

Re-pot the plants in a pot that you think will be able to accommodate your orchids and their growth for the next couple of years. Make sure that such pots provide drainage, and don’t forget to keep them in an upright position in order to make sure that nutrients are evenly distributed.

The care of plants is almost the same with the care of animals. Your orchids must always be pampered and showered with enough care in order for them to grow and produce beautiful flowers, which will have the power to make you feel relaxed and rewarded for all your efforts. You must take care of plants for after all, they too, have life. Good luck on re-potting orchids!

Orchids create a wonderful look in your garden once they start to bloom. These flowers can provide you the kind of magical effect that you want your garden to obtain if proper care has been showered unto them. One way of properly caring for them is to know how to water orchids correctly and how regular you are going to provide them a supply of water. You should also know the most effective fertilization strategies for them so you are guaranteed of their successful blooms when the time for this comes. It is a requirement that you should learn the right amount of water, sunlight and fertilizer you should provide these orchids because you cannot expect them to grow as you want them to be if you haven’t given them the kind of attention that they need. Your orchids are certain to survive and thrive in your garden once you have learned about their kind and you know how to make them grow well.

Like any other living things, orchids, in order for them to survive, are in need of the proper growing condition. This includes providing them with a continuous supply of water, sunlight and fertilizer at the right amount. This means that you have to consider their exact living condition so you would know what amount of these living requirements they require for their long survival. Be able to obtain information on how to water orchids the right and most effective way so the results that you desire will be within your grasp. This does not mean that you have to drown your orchids with water every so often for them to obtain their survival. You have to be aware of the correct amount of water supply that they need. You cannot expect them to obtain their most beautiful bloom when you water them excessively. As a normal rule, in accordance to the orchid’s natural habitat, the orchid’s soil and its bark should be completely dried out before you give them their water supply. This means that you should not easily leap into the wrong assumption that once the soil in your orchid’s pot becomes dry, you water them immediately. This is a needless reaction as orchids need to eliminate all moisture in their barks before they scream for water. So once the bark of your orchid is not yet completely dried out, it is just right to wait for the proper time to water it. It is alright to water them once a week if the bark still contains moisture.

Orchids can bloom the most beautiful and desirable way once proper care and attention has been provided them. You can expect your garden to create a haven of relaxation for you and your family once you learn how to water orchids the right way. When you do this, you can expect the flowers to have their perfect bloom and transform your garden magically into a wondrous place. Having this kind of garden can allow you to obtain the kind of peace, serenity and relaxation that you need. It will help relax your heart and mind.

Sunlight, water and nourishment are the primary needs of numerous kinds of house plants, which include orchids. The kind of light that your orchid plants obtain is one of the most essential elements to keep these beautiful house flowers healthy. Orchid species have varying needs for light, so you must be aware of the kind of orchid you are taking care of. Orchids are tropical plants found in the warmer areas around the globe; therefore, these house plants definitely need an ample amount of diffused light. These orchids are grown in tropical places where there is a consistent diverse pattern of sun and shade. It is highly recommended that for your orchid lights needs, you must place your orchids in an eastern facing window, which can provide cooler morning sunshine and prevent the overexposure of your houseplants to the afternoon sunlight that can lead to undesired burning. An orchid needs approximately twelve hours of sunlight every day. However, the extreme sunlight in the afternoon makes it impossible for these orchids to obtain the necessary light without damage.

Determining the light requirements of your orchids requires you to gather sufficient information about the species your orchid belongs to, which can give you a good approximation of the basic sun and shade needs of your house plant. You can choose from a number of methods on obtaining information about your orchid plant. Your first steps in knowing your orchid plant can be carried out by asking several questions from the seller of the orchids. You can also make use of the quick and easy access to the World Wide Web, you can do brief or profound researches on the type of orchid plant you intend to buy. Some orchid species need great amounts of sunlight; some species of orchids tend to wilt if there is not enough shade. Orchid growers have formulated two distinct ways of determining the orchid lights needed by particular species of this popular house plant. Shady conditions are very favorable to soft growing orchids, while brighter and warmer conditions nourish hard growing orchids. These two orchid types immensely differ on the type of blooms they offer to their owners. Soft growing orchids present small and infrequent blooms because of their minimal need for light. On the other hand, hard growing orchids show off beautiful and bountiful blooms, but without much plant that can also be very unhealthy due to prolonged exposure to light.

Sunlight is a need that can only be acquired naturally and the amounts can vary greatly depending on your location. One of the alternatives that many orchid growers use for orchid lights are grow-lights. These artificial lights can be easily purchased and comes with a timer that allows you to keep track of both the lightness and darkness your orchid plant receives. Another artificial source of light is a fluorescent lamp that offers moderate amounts of light. Orchids were formerly grown only by experienced horticulturists because of the complex needs for light of these house plants. But with the emergence of these artificial light sources, orchids can now be grown even by novice plant growers. A good combination of sunlight, additional supplements from a grow-light or a fluorescent light and a complete understanding of the species your orchid belongs to, can give you bright and pretty orchid blooms for the entire blooming season.

Most people are familiar with several types of hybrids and species of orchids. However, orchids can only be classified into two different types: terrestrial orchids and epiphyte orchids. Knowing about these orchid types can help you learn how to choose the type of orchid, and know how to take care of them.

Terrestrial orchids are those that grow from the ground. Some of the most popular orchids are terrestrial orchid species. This type of orchid has roots that are hidden beneath or under the soil like most plants, although terrestrial orchids can sometimes be semi-terrestrial. Orchids of this type can have roots both under the soil and aerial roots. One very good example of a terrestrial orchid is the cymbidium orchids. There are over 40 species and over a thousand hybrids for cymbidium orchids. It is one of the very first orchids that were cultivated. Cymbidium orchid is one of the semi-terrestrial orchid types. Aside from growing on the ground, cymbidiums can also grow on rocks and trees. An environment with rotten woods, decayed leaves, and loose humus is good for growing cymbidiums. They thrive in Southeast Asia, Japan and Australia, in their natural habitat. It is very easy to grow, and this is the reason behind its popularity especially for those who are just beginning to learn how to grow orchids. It can be very flowery when properly taken care of.

Epiphyte orchids are those that have roots exposed above the ground. The term epiphyte can actually be used to refer to other plants that have visible roots. Most epiphytic orchids flourish on trees and rocks, but they are not dependent on the tree for the nourishment that the orchids need. The orchids cling onto branches or trees by their roots. Organic matter would usually accumulate between the roots of the orchid and the branch of the tree, and this is where the orchid gets nutrient. During dry periods, the orchid’s root help sustain the plant by absorbing water. The root is surrounded by a sponge-like covering that can absorb water easily. It will continue soaking up water until it is completely saturated, and this will make the root turn green. It will gradually release the water for the plant’s nourishment, providing a steady supply of water even if it doesn’t rain for a long time. For epiphyte orchids cling onto rocks, the airy and light environment helps the plant grow.

Some epiphyte orchid types are Dendrobiums and Phalaenopsis. Dendrobiums, although famous, require more care than Cymbidiums. They do not flower as much as Cymbidiums do. It is best to place them in a humid environment, and always try to keep the plant moist. There are over a thousand Dendrobium species found in natural tropical conditions all over Northern India, Polynesia, Southeast Asia and Australia. The Phalaenopsis orchid however, is an epiphyte orchid that is easy to grow, plus the flowers last really long. They are popular in weddings and come in different colors like yellow, pink, or even stripes.

Many people believe that caring for orchids is a hobby for the rich, or for those with green thumbs and lots of free time. This belief is simply not true. Practically anyone can now care for orchids. With over a hundred thousand orchid species and hybrids to choose from, there is an orchid to suit any budget, lifestyle, and gardening skill.

The amount of time and effort that typically goes into caring for orchids is the same as that required by most other house or garden plants. However, some orchids do require special attention. If someone plans to care for orchids, the first thing that he should do is to learn about the specific requirements that an orchid needs. When an orchid is given the appropriate care, it will give back to its owner the exquisite beauty that orchids are prized for. Their gorgeous blooms will bring forth smiles of appreciation and add beauty to any house.

Because of their unique beauty, orchids have now become very popular house plants. Among the most popular is the phaleanopsis, which usually has white or purple flowers. It is very easy to care for. With the proper attention, the phaleanopsis, like many other orchids, can continue to bloom for about three months. When their health is maintained, they look as pretty as they do in stores where they receive professional care.

Most orchids need lots of sunlight. But it is best if they are not exposed to the harsh midday sun. It is recommended then that orchids be placed near a window on the eastern part of the house. This way, they will get plenty of early morning sunlight. Sunlight in the late afternoon is also good for the orchids. An alternative is to use fluorescent lights instead of natural sunlight. Flourescent lamps may be placed about one foot above the orchid’s flowers.

The ideal temperature range for orchids is from 55 degrees Fahrenheit to about 80 degrees. When the weather becomes warmer than this, orchid buds start to wither and they will not bloom.

Another requirement for orchids is moisture. But while they need moisture, one should not overwater the plants. This can destroy their blooms. A good rule of thumb in caring for orchids is to water them once every ten weeks. Some orchid growers have a water tray which they continuously place below the orchids, making sure that the roots do not touch the water tray. This way, the roots are prevented from absorbing too much moisture.

To keep orchids in bloom, use fertilizers before any bud appears. Once the flower is in full bloom, the fertilizer is no longer needed. It also helps when one carefully prunes the orchids, as this encourages them to continue to bloom for the longest possible time. With pruning, a second set of flowers will likely come out.

Caring for orchids is easy enough, provided one pays attention to the essentials of their care. These simple-to-remember essentials are sunlight, moisture, the right temperature, and fertilizers. Caring for orchids is a fulfilling hobby that lets one enjoy gorgeous blooms and fragrant scents all throughout the blooming season of orchids.
